Parent/Guardians should contact the Attendance Office as soon as possible when a student is absent. If you have questions about whether an absence may be excused, please contact the Attendance Office.
Students are expected to arrive at school to each class on time. Excessive absences and tardies may result in attendance interventions. Carter High School works with students and families on a case-by-case basis to support and improve attendance.

Attendance Matters!
Regular attendance and being on time each day help students stay connected to instruction, complete assignments, earn credits, and make progress toward graduation. The Carter High School Attendance Review Team is commited to partnering with students and families to support positive attendance and address barriers to attendance.
California Attendance Law
Under California Education Code 48200, students ages 6-18 are generally required to attend school full-time unless an exemption applies.
What is Truancy?
Under Education Code 48260, a student may be classified as truant when they have:
- 3 Full Days of unexcused absences in one school year; or
- 3 Occasions of being tardy or absent without a valid excuse for more than 30 minutes; or
- A combination of these circumstances
Chronic Absenteeism
A student considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the school days in a school year.
Our goal is to work with students and families to understand attendance barriers and provide support. Interventions may include parent/guardian communication, attendance monitoring, conferences, attendance contracts, SART meetings, and referrals to additional resources or SARB when appropriate.
